Practice of Literature

Literature is important in everyday life, because it connects individuals with larger truths and ideas in a society. Literature teaches us how to live in reality. It makes the reader visit places, experience events, meet people, listen to them, feel their joys and sufferings. Moreover, it creates a way for people to record their thoughts and experiences in a way that is accessible to others through the fictionalized accounts of the experience. For this reason, from 1997 to present, ILIM is publishing a well-liked periodical called ‘Joti’ (জ্যোতি) once every year. This annual periodical inspires the students of ILIM to think freely and write fearlessly in their different literary activities all the time. A Bengali poem of an ILIM student, published in ‘Joti’ in 2011 is the following:

নার্গিস আক্তার, রোল-১১

লাইব্রেরী সায়েন্স-এর ছাত্রী আমি, পড়ি ইলিমে

স্বপ্ন দেখি গড়ব জীবন, সুন্দর ও সঠিক নিয়মে।

লাইব্রেরী সায়েন্স বিষয়টা মোর ভীষণ পছন্দ

আমি চাই সৃষ্টি করতে নতুন গতি ও ছন্দ।

আমাদের অধ্যক্ষ শামসুজ্জামান স্যার

সকল বিষয়ে ভীষণ পাণ্ডিত্য তাঁর।

ক্লাসে মন্ত্রমুগ্ধের মত, তাঁর কথা শুনি

ভবিষ্যতে তাঁর মত হব, মনে মনে স্বপ্ন বুনি।

আমাদের উপাধ্যক্ষ নজরুল ইসলাম স্যার

সব সময় আমাদের জন্য সহজ করে

সবকিছু সম্পর্কে ধারণা পাই তা পড়ে।

ক্যাটালগিং শিখেছি সব, নেই কিছু বাকি আর।

ক্লাসিফিকেশন পড়ান আমাদের লতিফ স্যার

কখনো রেগে যান, আবার কখনো গল্প করেন সত্তার।

আমাদের সবার প্রিয় বেলাল ভাই

অফিসিয়াল যত সমস্যায় তার কাছে ছুটে যাই।

তার কাছে গেলে সবকিছুর সহজ সমাধান পাই

সর্বদা তাঁর হাঁসি মুখটা দেখতে চাই।  

ইলিমের সহপাঠীরা সবাই ভীষণ ভাল

কখনো কোনো ব্যাপারে, করে না মুখ কালো।

যখন ওদের কাছে কোনো সাহায্য চাই

আন্তরিকভাবে চেষ্টা করে, সহজে সবকিছু পাই।

দোয়া করি ছাত্র শিক্ষক সবার জন্য

আল্লাহ্ যেন তাঁদের সকল ক্ষেত্রে করে ধন্য।

Truly speaking, ILIM always believes that writing clarifies the students’ power of thinking psychologically. In fact, the thoughts and feelings are nebulous happenings in our mind holes, but writing forces us to crystallize those thoughts, and put them in both rational and imaginative orders.

Study Tours

The memories of the study tours, organized by ILIM are among the most prominent of the formative years mainly, because these are the welcome breaks in the routine for both students and teachers. The students of ILIM are taken for the study tours in the different traditional, historical, and popular places of Bangladesh once a year. On a good educational tour, the students of ILIM can experience a different culture through new eyes. The tours of ILIM are nowadays offering volunteering opportunities and other chances to see how people of varying socio-economic levels in a variety of locales live. By means of the study tours, a student sees, touches and smells historical relics, ancient artifacts and original sources of text becomes motivated to learn more in depth when he returns to the classroom. The study tours often cater to more than one learning style, making them excellent teaching tools for the students of ILIM in reality.

No doubt, a study tour can be a safe way to experience the world outside of one’s home. On the tour, the students are always surrounded by other people they know, and they are guided throughout the experience by their teacher and other guides. Actually, getting away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom gives students an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment. They may be able to connect on more of a personal level undoubtedly. Students may be able to spend much of day of study tour in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other. Having a study tour in the early part of the term is wise, since it will allow students to bond with classmates they may not know very well. When the students realize how much they enjoy traveling, it can open new doors for them. They might decide to study abroad to more thoroughly immerse themselves in different cultures. They may also be more likely to travel independently in future, continuing to broaden their understanding of the world. However, through the study tours, every student of ILIM gets the chances to practice his or her social skills and critical thinking abilities outside of the controlled classroom settings.
